Winning your share of the 'grey pound' - CIM Event
University of Cumbria, Carlisle, 13th October 2009 18:00-20:00
We are facing a demographic revolution as the baby boomers hit retirement age. On top of which we are all living longer and healthier lives well into our 90s and 100s.
Marketers have been rumbling on about the grey market since the 1980's but few have taken it seriously preferring to concentrate on the young and trendy.
However, the statistics speak for themselves, but are we paying attention, and can we afford to ignore the sector any longer?
* 19.5 million consumers, or 42% of all adults
* £260bn spending pa - c40% of total annual UK consumer spend
* The fastest growing segment of internet users (Source ONS)
The sector is also surprisingly resilient to the economic downturn, and many still have high disposable incomes. But within this market there is also a huge diversity of segments, representing real challenges for marketers in developing effective communications. Fortunately the grey market is as dynamic as it is diverse, with consumers who are eager to try new things, visit new places and embrace new technology.
For anyone who is currently targeting the over 50's - or planning to - this talk will offer plenty of good advice and tips. It will identify the major segments and their different characteristics, and illustrate how to communicate with them effectively.
Julian Healey has extensive experience in marketing to the Grey Sector having worked as Head of Marketing at Saga for several years. He is now working as a marketing consultant based in the North West.
Speaker: Julian Healey, Consultant, Springtide Marketing, Julian is an experienced marketer who has created numerous successful direct marketing campaigns targeted at the over 50 sector.
