Bedtime reading
A selection of Marketing Scout's favourite books that hopefully will help kickstart your creative juices and if nothing else, help to remind you why you're in this wierd & wonderful industry.
Tell an Outrageous Lie by Mandy Wheeler and James de Ville
Most of us need a bit of help to get the brain cells going sometimes and when a MochaCappaChino doesn't work, this brilliant little book might. It’s great to look at as well as being inspirational. You may not choose to read this book in one sitting but it certainly proves useful to have lying around your desk for those moments of blankness.
Guerilla advertising by Ty Montague, Gavin Lucas, and Mike Dorrian
A showcase of the stunts, street propaganda & all round sneaky tactics of some truly innovative international brands. From big-name brands to not-for-profits, over 70 international campaigns are featured here.
Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite by Paul Arden
I was introduced to one of Paul Ardens previous books, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be, by a great mentor of mine and this book delivers the same level of inspiration. Sometimes thinking illogically can prove very useful and this book helps you to do that in its own little way. And what’s more, it’s easily digested in under an hour.
Problem Solved by Michael Johnson
A creative reminder that we’re ultimately in marketing in order to solve others problems. This book contains great imagery and details the theory behind each idea well. Read in one go or simply have it around to dive into everytime you need a reminder of why we’re all here!
A Smile in the Mind: Witty Thinking in Graphic Design by Beryl McAlhone & David Stuart
Packed full of funny graphics, it’s a pleasure to dip in & out of this book. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither does it encourage the reader to do so. Including work from over 300 designers worldwide, it’s great to get your creative juices going when suffering a drought!
Hoopla by Crispin Porter, Bogusky, and Warren Berger
This book showcases the work of advertising agency Crispin Porter and Bogusky. CP + B sexed up Virgin Airlines, made Burger King big again and took on one of the major tobaccos companies with their controversial Truth campaign. Truly unique, this book is anything but conventional...even the book cover is mischievous and may cause discomfort!
How to Have Kick-Ass Ideas: Get Curious, Get Adventurous, Get Creative by Chris Barez-Brown
A practical and inspirational read from the Brand Innovation consultancy What If! This book works on the premise that everyone is creative but there’s an art to unlocking that creativity. Step by step, you’re guided through fresh & fun ways to unlock your ideas. Great for individuals but equally as useful if you’re looking to inspire others.
Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This! by Luke Sullivan
An oldie but a goodie, this book explores the history of advertising and has recently been updated to contain online too. It contains such greats as the original VW ads and is a nice warm cuddly reminder of why advertising is so great. Hey Whipple isn’t exactly groundbreaking but provides a good introduction of the ‘Dark Arts’ to newcomers and is equally useful at providing those seasoned pros with the basics that still ring true.
